A project led by several of our team members (lead: Dr. Jennifer Coelho, co-leads: Dr. Josie Geller, Kim Williams, Patricia Obee) is one of the recipients of the Strengthening the Health Workforce for System Transformation grants, funded through Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Institutes de recherche en santé du Canada and Michael Smith Health Research BC.

Led by cluster collaborator Dr. Nicole Obeid, together with Dr. Jennifer Coelho and cluster collaborators Dr. Linda Booij, and Dr. Gina Dimitropoulos and Dr. Debra Katzman, a pan-Canadian study quantified the social and economic costs of a surge in eating disorders among children and youth during and after the pandemic. The study authors estimated that incremental costs to the Canadian health care system totaled nearly $40 million (a 21% increase), but warn that this number represents a vast underestimate. The study highlights the need for increased resources dedicated to both health care supports and monitoring data for eating disorders.
